Christoph and Anna Catharina Schneider Family
Christoph Schneider, a widower, and Anna Catharina, daughter of Johann Heinrich Albert, were married in Büdingen on February 27, 1749. In 1766, they decided to accept the offer described in Catherine's Manifesto and migrate to Russia. The couple sailed with other colonists from the north German port of Lübeck aboard the Russian pink “Vologda” and arrived in Oranienbaum, Russia on August 10, 1766 with four children, all of whom were baptized in Büdingen on the following dates: Susanna Catharina Philippina, July 30, 1752; Maria Sophia Wilhelmina, October 27, 1754; Johann Heinrich, June 19, 1757; and Johann Georg, March 9, 1760. Christoph, Susanna Catharina Philippina, and Johann Georg must have died at some point during the journey to the settlement area on the lower Volga River.
Over a year later, the surviving members of the family were among the founders who arrived in Norka on August 15, 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 Census as Household No. 27. Anna Catharina is married to Martin Ross, and Maria Sophia Wilhelmina and Johann Heinrich are listed as stepchildren of Martin Ross.
