The colonists from Norka were primarily from the modern German state of Hessen. They brought with them to Russia their beliefs, culture, language and traditions. In Russia, these colonists were reshaped by geography and geopolitical forces beyond their control. Despite the fact that the Volga Germans were far from their homelands, surrounded by many other ethnic groups, they never lost their sense of being a distinct people.
Norka grew from a frontier settlement founded by 738 people in 1767 to over 14,000 people by 1911. As the colony expanded, daughter colonies such as Brunnental, Rosenfeld and Neu-Norka were developed to accommodate the growing population and their need for land.
