Norka, the 1st of March 1924
To Nikolaus Krieger in Portland, Oregon
Dear Brother:
I share here with you the sad news that our dear mother died February 18 after a four month illness at the age of 79 years, 8 months and 10 days. She was buried on Thursday, February 21 and Pastor Wacker himself conducted the funeral on the basis of the testament, Psalm 90:10, where it states "The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength, labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
The deceased was carried into the church, and the Pastor portrayed her personal record very nicely, and also mentioned about you in America, that you had no word that your mother always and forever blessed the departing of this life.
At the farmyard they sang "It is enough, any weak mind perceives itself in the past, where my fathers sleep." On the way to the church they sang "Let me go, that my Jesus I may see!" The last song, on the way the cemetery was "Christ, he is my life and death, my gain."
Stomach trouble and old age weakness caused our mother's death. She was certainly buried honorably. The coffin was framed in gold, and decorations beautifully trimmed it. The coffin had been made at the same time as father's, and kept until now.
Then I also let you know that we received the money, I mean the 10 dollars which you sent us. I thank you with all my heart. Tell the other brothers so that they will understand when something is sent, that the burden is not on you alone.
Be you, together with wife and children and the other brothers, do receive our heartfelt greetings from me, and write soon. Give greetings to our mother's sister, Mrs. Heinrich Hamburger of Harvard, Nebraska.
Your brother,
Peter Krieger
