Gerhard Bonwetsch
Dr. Gerhard Bonwetsch was born April 23, 1885 in Dorpat (now Tartu). He was the son of Norka pastor Rev. Gottlieb Nathanael Bonwetsch.
After graduating from high school in 1904 in Göttingen, he studied history and theology in Göttingen and Berlin. After receiving his doctorate in 1907 in Göttingen, he taught at Gertraud in Berlin-Dahlem and the Lyceum in Hannover.
Bonwetsch was a historian of Eastern European history, especially the Volga Germans. He is the author of Geschichte der deutschen Kolonien an der Wolga (The History of the German Colonies on the Volga), published in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1919. The book was dedicated to his father on his 70th birthday.
From 1949 to 1955, Bonwetsch was the first chairman of the Association of History Teachers in Germany.
Gerhard Bonwetsch died in 1956 in Detmold, Germany.
