Jacob and Anna Maria Weitzel
Johann Jacob Weitzel, the son of Johann Adam Weitzel and Anna Catharina Stuber, was born in Bönstadt on October 17, 1737. Jacob married Anna Maria Feuerstein, the daughter of Johann Conrad Feuerstein and Anna Margaretha Hartmann, on December 27, 1764.
In early 1766, Jacob and Anna Maria accepted the offer described in Catherine's Manifesto. The couple sailed with other colonists from the north German port of Lübeck aboard the Russian ship “Apollo” and arrived in Oranienbaum, Russia on August 29, 1766.
Jacob and Anna Maria were traveling with three other Weitzel households:
1) Christoph and Gertrude (née Kessel) Weitzel. Christoph died before reaching Norka and Gertrude married Lorenz Kuhn from Hettersroth.
2) Christian Weitzel (born about 1746) and his wife Susanna. They are listed as Household No. 172 in the 1767 Census.
3) Johann Heinrich Weitzel and his wife Maria Catharina Luft. This couple is not shown on the transport lists and is not recorded in any 1767 census lists for the colonies.
Jacob and Anna Maria were among the founders who arrived in Norka on August 26, 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 Census as Household No. 167.
Researched by Ruth Schultz, Ernie Margheim, and Brent Mai.
