The Railroad That Never Was
The schematic map below is dated September 1936 and shows the planned construction of a railroad line that would have passed between the Volga German colonies of Norka and Huck. The railway was intended to connect the cities of Saratov and Millerovo. Millerovo is home to a large rail station in the Rostov region. From Millerovo the rail line would have continued to the port city of Rostov-on-Don providing maritime shipping access to the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.
By the late 1930's preparatory construction work on the railway had began. With the outbreak of war in 1941 all work on the line ended and the project was abandoned. The completion of this railroad would have positively benefited the lives of people in Norka, but it wasn't to be.
