Johannes Romeis
Johannes Romeis was born on March 4, 1794, in Neuwied, a Moravian Brethren colony in the north region of the modern-day German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Neuwied was formed mainly by refugees from France and Switzerland in the mid-1700s. Johannes was confirmed there in 1808.
Johannes probably arrived in Norka in late 1813. He was not a descendant of one of the original colonist families. Johannes was perhaps called to service by Pastor Johann Baptist Cattaneo, who had many connections to the Moravian church. Shortly after arrival, Johannes served as the Schulmeister (schoolmaster) in Norka until 1815.
Johannes married Christina Ernestina Hansen in January 1814. She was born on April 18, 1795, in the Moravian colony of Sarepta, south of Norka on the Volga River. At least four daughters, all born in Norka, resulted from this marriage.
Christina died sometime after 1845, and Johannes married a second time to Nathalie Früauf on November 17, 1854. Nathalie was born on February 24, 1832. She was the illegitimate daughter of Charlotte Frederica Louisa Früauf, the daughter of Pastor Karl Jakob Früauf. Johannes died in Norka at the age of 60 on February 20, 1855, shortly after his second marriage.
