Dr. Wilbert G. Walter
Wilbert G. Walter was born November 16, 1933, in Lingle, Wyoming, the son of John and Elizabeth Walter. He attended the University of Colorado and played basketball on the team that advanced to the Final Four in 1955. After losing to Bill Russell and the University of San Francisco in the national semifinal game, the Buffalos defeated the University of Iowa for third place in the tournament.
In 1958, Walter earned a B.A. degree in organic chemistry while serving as assistant basketball coach for the freshman and varsity teams. He earned a Ph.D. in organic and medicinal chemistry in 1961 from the University of Connecticut. He was a Professor of Pharmacology at the University of North Dakota (Fargo), the Medical University of Tennessee (Memphis), and the University of Mississippi.
Dr. Walter joined the faculty of the Medical University of South Carolina in 1968 and became Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biology and Pharmacology at MUSC in 1971. He continued in that capacity until his retirement in 1993 when he was named Professor Emeritus.
He served on the Isle of Palms City Council for four years and was past Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and Zoning Committee.
