Dr. Wilbert G. Walter
Wilbert G. Walter was born November 16,1933 in Lingle, Wyoming, the son of John and Elizabeth Walter. He attended the University of Colorado, where he played basketball on the team that advanced to the Final Four in 1955. After losing to Bill Russell and the University of San Francisco in the national semifinal game, the Buffalos defeated the University of Iowa for the third place in the tournament.
Walter earned a B.A. degree in 1955 in organic chemistry in 1958 while serving as assistant basketball coach for the freshman and varsity teams. He also earned a Ph.D. in 1961 from the University of Connecticut in organic and medicinal chemistry. He was a Professor of Pharmacology at the University of North Dakota (Fargo), the Medical University of Tennessee (Memphis), and the University of Mississippi.
Dr. Walter joined the faculty of the Medical University of South Carolina in 1968 and became Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biology and Pharmacology at MUSC in 1971, and continued in that capacity until his retirement in 1993, when he was named Professor Emeritus.
He served on the Isle of Palms City Council for four years and was past Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and Zoning Committee.
