Johann Georg and Katharina Elizabeth Sauer
My grandfather, Johann Georg (George) Sauer, was born in Norka on October 5, 1873. In 1909, he married Katherine Elizabeth Brill, born in Norka on December 24, 1886.
George was a farmer and former troika chauffeur for Reverend Wilhelm Stärkel in Norka. In 1906, George helped Rev. Stärkel put out a wildfire that threatened the entire village.
Grandpa was never beardless. Grandpa immigrated to Canada on November 13, 1912, aboard the steamship Ausonia. He went to a farm under the sponsorship of Mr. Spady. Later, he earned enough money to bring Grandma and their four children together, late in 1912 or 1913.
The photograph below was taken in February 1945 in Stony Plain, Alberta, at the home (log cabin) my grandfather had made after he arrived in Canada. Stony Plain was a settlement for many Volga Germans from Norka. George was related to Peter Sauer, who later became the famous professional wrestler Ray Steele, and Ludwig (Louis) Sauer, the father of the famous American football player George Sauer.
