Johann Georg Schleuning
According to Conrad Brill's memoirs titled "Memories of Norka", there was an older man known as Reicher Schleuning (Rich Schleuning) who played a prominent role in the village during his time living in Norka (1895-1921). Schleuning was an entrepreneur who owned a general merchandise store (Lafka), a mill, fruit and vegetable yards, and farmed land with about twenty teams of horses and oxen. He hired many people to run his enterprises and was one of the largest employers in Norka. Brill tells us that Reicher Schleuning raised one of his uncles (also named Conrad) when his grandparents died of cholera in the 1860’s and three of their sons, including Conrad's father, were orphaned. From these stories, we also know that Reicher Schleuning was married to a woman with a maiden name of Vögler.
All of these clues lead us to the conclusion that Reicher Schleuning was Johann Georg Schleuning who was born in Norka on August 7, 1868, the son of Heinrich Schleuning (born 1842) and Catharina Hohnstein (born 1843).
Johann Georg married Catharina Vögler on February 9, 1888. She is the daughter of Johannes Vögler (born 1832) and Anna Margaretha Müller (born 1836). Johannes Vögler (phonetically spelled "Faigler") was known as Kerver Vögler. He owned a large leather tanning business in Norka and also employed many people.
Johann Georg and Catharina had a son named Alexander who was born on January 13, 1899. He married Olga (also Olinde) Schreiber about 1920. Olinde is the daughter of Wilhelm Conrad Schreiber (born 1872) and Catharina Margaretha Hohnstein (born 1878). The Schreiber family also owned a large mill in the nearby Russian village of Dmitriyevka.
